Get alerted when an n8n workflow silently stops

Add an HTTP Request node to the end of an n8n workflow so a skipped, failed or empty run alerts you.

n8n's Error Trigger only fires when a node throws. It can't tell you that the Schedule Trigger never fired, the instance was down, or an HTTP node returned 200 OK with nothing in it. A heartbeat at the end of the workflow can.

1. Add an HTTP Request node as the last step

  • Method: POST
  • URL: https://diditrun.app/p/YOUR-TOKEN
  • Send Body: on, Body Content Type: JSON
  • Body:
json
{
  "items": {{ $input.all().length }},
  "text": "{{ $json.summary ?? 'run complete' }}"
}

Turn on Settings → Retry On Fail for the node, and Always Output Data on the node before it so an empty result still reaches the ping (and gets flagged as empty instead of silently skipped).

2. Set a sanity check

On the watch, set Minimum item count to the smallest number that still makes sense (often 1). Zero items now raises an empty alert.

3. (Optional) Report failures immediately

Create a small error workflow: Error Trigger → HTTP Request (POST `https://diditrun.app/p/YOUR-TOKEN/fail`), and select it under the main workflow's Settings → Error workflow. Failures alert right away instead of waiting for the deadline.

4. (Optional) Mark the start

Put an HTTP Request node right after the trigger hitting https://diditrun.app/p/YOUR-TOKEN/start. The dashboard then shows when a run started but never finished.
